Well, I'm on my way back now. Currently stuck in Sydney airport for 10 hours. Unfortunately, 'cos I didn't have a visa, they won't let me out of the airport and apparently, if they gave me a visa the airline would be fined $5,000. Oh well, I guess I'll spend the day wandering round a selection of shops full of stuff I have no desire to buy!
See you soon!
Nigel.

| Ok, a 6 hour, 19 km walk in the park! Up at 5.30, Roy and I (dropped off by Tarsh - thank you) set off on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing at about 7.45 to get Devil's Staircase done before the heat of the day set in. The scenery was absolutely stunning, sometimes trecherous, occasionally smelly (I think that was Roy most of the time). Devil's Staircase was quite a climb but we made good progress chatting to other people along the way. Later we stopped for a quick sammidge by a beautiful lake sheltering from the wind behind a huge rock. The weather was just about perfect and we managed to complete the crossing in about 1.5 hrs less than we originally thought. Good to get my boots dirty (I brought them a long way). This treck will certainly be one of the highlights of my trip - thanks Roy. |

I've now made my way to Owhango, not far from Whakapapa and Taupo and I'm staying with my old skool friend Roy, his 6, sorry 7, lovely lawn mowers, beautiful partner Tarsh and gorgeous daughter, Millie (and cat Buster).
Because Roy still wets the bed he was up early and dragged me to Taupo to collect stuff for his mowers or summat. He also did a great job of tour guide showing me numerous local sights - the highlight being where he works at Whakapapa ski resort - was absolutely beautiful. I even got to go on the snow despite it being summer here.
Obviously Roy is outside mowing the lawn, leaving me to kick back and conserve energy for tomorrow - he's making me get up even earlier to do the Tongariro Crossing!

| I've now made my way to Wellington and am staying with the lovely James and Laura for a couple of days. Started with a Christmas party as soon as I arrived and have spent today checking out some great places around Wellington with James while poor Laura worked all day. Aw! |
