Treated myself to the Greenbelt Festival this year. Went to a few seminars (ok, not many), checked out loads of bands and bumped into a few friends including Andy, Mike, Lauren, Adam, Sarah, Pete and Roisin, and the lovely Charley came to see me. Some of the highlights for me were, Shed Seven and The Herbaliser - was very excited about seeing these bands but also stumbled upon a few bands I'd not heard before.
I really enjoyed Toxic Federation a metal band, who really need to be on Main Stage next year please!!!, and loved The Stagger Rats - alrite, I can't resist a bit of hammond organ and was attracted by the 'gypsy death funk' description (seemed like a good extension of my recent death jazz explorations)! Apart from the organ, what I love about this band is that they know how to end a song*! Brilliant! Check 'em out!
Another great find was Arun Ghosh, British-Asian clarinetist with his Indo-jazz sextet. Performed a beautiful and intimate gig on the Monday afternoon. Well worth checking out and is also included on one of Gilles Peterson's collections - obviously one I haven't got yet!
* For an exploration of ending songs check out this BBC Radio 4 Programme - Not Fade Away.
